Finland, Another Beautiful Place

Category : Places

Finland tourism is on the rise. As word gets out about all that Finland travel has to offer, this relatively quiet European country is beginning to make a lot of noise in the international travel market. Regardless of when you choose to visit Finland, the variety of Finland attractions is sure to please, and though summertime is the peak Finland travel season, you’re bound to have a good time in the spring, fall, and winter as well. There has arguably been no better time to enjoy a Finland vacation, so plan yours today, and see for yourself what Finland is really all about.

From the Finland national parks to the many great museums, there is something for everyone here. Some of the best cathedrals and castles in Finland are also museums, and they are certainly among the top Finland attractions. In Helsinki alone, the Helsinki Cathedral and the Uspenski Cathedral beg a visit, and any trip to Savonlinna is worth it just to see the Olavinlinna Castle. Of course, one can not leave out the attractive city of Turku when considering the Finland castles, as the main one here was the administrative hub of the country when it was under Swedish rule. Finland was part of Sweden from the thirteenth century up until the early 1800s, when Russia assumed control after winning the Finnish War. The Finnish people managed to hold on to their identities and overall culture through both Swedish and Russian rule, and today, Finns are proud of their heritage and their history. Finland declared its independence from Russia in 1917, and today, Finnish citizens enjoy a quality of life that is almost without compare. Old traditions are slowly giving way to modern technology, of which Finland is at the forefront.

Travel in Finland is aided by the efficient and complete Finnish transportation network, which includes planes, buses, boats, and trains. Using these means of transportation, you can visit the Finnish archipelago in the south, explore the vast and scarcely-populated Lapland region in the north, or stop in the central part of the country to enjoy the lakes and rolling, forested hills. Each of these regions offers unique landscapes, and there are enough Finland national parks spread throughout the country to satisfy a number of outdoor sightseeing pursuits. While enjoying the national parks in Lapland, you will arguably see the most wildlife, as this is a land of bears, lemmings, wolves, wolverines, and reindeer. Yes, some 300,000 reindeer can be found in Lapland, and it is also the home to Santa Claus, according to many. Just outside of the Lapland provincial capital of Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village attracts scores of Finland vacationers, and it’s easily among the top Finland attractions. Anyone traveling with young kids will definitely want to consider a trip to Santa Claus Village, as it is almost priceless to see children’s faces when they meet Jolly St. Nicholas.

The Lapland region is a good place to enjoy another of the top Finland attractions—the Finnish Northern Lights. Best viewed in the winter, when the sun barely rises and an almost complete darkness settles in, the Finnish Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, is a phenomenon that many visitors try to include on their Finland vacation itinerary. There are some unique Finland tours that include attempts at seeing the Finnish Northern Lights, and though you are never guaranteed to see them, your chances are pretty good up north. The opportunities to see the Northern Lights on a Finland vacation decrease in the summertime, which as opposed to winter, sees an unusual amount of daylight. In fact, come midsummer, 21 hours of daylight is the norm, so you can enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities long into the night when you enjoy Finland travel in the summer. Teeing it up for a round of Finnish golf at midnight in the summer is a golfing experience that you are not soon to forget.

Place to Live: France

France is home to beautiful countryside, great food and wine, friendly people, and a history full or art, architecture, and monuments. Three different bodies of water surround France, making three distinct regions of beaches and coves. France has a rugged, alpine area with hiking and ski resorts. Of course Paris France is the largest and most famous city in France, and it is home to many impressive and entertaining sights and venues.

Good Paris tours include plenty of monuments, famous museums, and world renowned dinning. Notre Dame cathedral, with its ornate interior is awe inspiring and popular destination. Pay homage to French author Victor Hugo, and ascend the bell tower for a look at the gargoyles from The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The Arc de Triomphe, located on the famed avenue Champs Élysées and centered in the world largest traffic roundabout, is a simple, yet daunting monument commissioned by Napoleon. The gothic Saint Chapelle, built in the 13th century, has 15 stained glass windows depicting an entire biblical history.

Of course, Paris tours should include a healthy selection of museums. There’s the Pompidou National Center of Art & Culture, home to an extensive modern art collection. The Musée d’Orsay, in a former railway station, displays French art nouveau, impressionist, and postimpressionist works. The Musée de Cluny, contains works from the middle ages, and a former Roman bath house, dating back to around 200 AD. Paris France is home to the world famous Louvre was built in the 12th century, and contains over 35,000 pieces of art, including the Mona Lisa.

Paris France has a dark side also. While taking Paris tours check out the Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise and le Catacombes. The cemetery includes the remains of Chopin, Moliere, Gertrude Stein, Jim Morrison, and the much kissed tomb of Oscar Wilde. Le Catacombes is an underground corridor made up of the bones of millions of Parisians are stacked after being exhumed from their graves to solve a hygiene problem in the late 18th century.

The Eiffel Tower is an impressive sight in Paris France worth getting close to. Lie in the grass at the Champs de mars and gaze at the steel structure. Ascend the tower for spectacular views of Paris. At least once on your stay, return at night with a bottle of Merlot to watch the spectacular light display. The Eiffel Tower tops out at over 1,000 feet, containing 2 restaurants, a souvenir shop, a post office (for that one of a kind postmark), snack bar, and a viewing area. The world famous Eiffel Tower is a mass of iron designed by Gustave Eiffel for the Universal Exposition of 1889 and was the tallest structure in the world until 1930, when New York’s Chrysler building surpassed it. The Paris tower faced criticism, especially from the artistic community of Paris, calling the structure a “truly tragic street lamp.” Allegedly, Guy de Maupassant ate lunch on the lower level of the Paris tower everyday because it was the only view of the city in which he couldn’t see it. The critics were slowly silenced as 2 million visitors ascended the tower 1889. Today, the Eiffel Tower is an icon of Paris, and is embraced by the city.

France vacations often include the town of Marseille, with its charming street markets, old port, and historic sections. Stout supporters of the revolution, Louis the XIV built two fortresses on the port, with guns facing the city. In addition, France’s national anthem is called La Marseilles, named from the soldiers chanting the tune as the marched to Paris. Normandy is an historic area of France. Home to the D-Day beaches, as well as many charming and picturesque towns. Joan of Arch was burned in Rouen, an ancient, inland town with superb medieval buildings and museums. Mont-St-Michael bay contains a beautiful seascape, with a 264 feet granite wall. Most France vacations include a stop on the French Rivera. It has a plethora of jet set towns including Nice, Cannes, and Saint Tropez. I’ll cover Nice France in depth, below. Bordeaux is home to amazing French wine and Lyon is a historic and well located metropolis, perfect for blitzing into Switzerland, Italy, and the Alps.

There are millions of places in the world that one could choose to live. Some are obviously eliminated if you have the choice, places like Antarctica, Death Valley, and deep in the jungle. But with all of the great places left, how do you choose when buying a home internationally? Fortunately there are tons of surveys about the best places to live and make an investment in. Now some of the lists were compiled by looking at quality of life while some where things like personal safety and air quality, but they still managed to top the lists.

Zurich, Switzerland stay very close to the top, and was number one a couple of times. Looking at it with a quality of life stand point, Zurich is one of the wealthiest cities in Europe and has plenty of scenic hills and mountains. Plus it is rich with history, and it shows. The buildings still hold the old styles and canals and rivers run through the city. As far as air quality and personal safety it’s on top. Even the weather is great. While it can get pretty cold (low 20′s) in the winter, it never gets really hot, topping out at around 80 degrees. Even if you are looking for an investment property, Zurich would be a great place.

Another place seeming to sit high in the ranks is Auckland, New Zealand. This city is more city-like than some of the others on the lists. One of the things you will notice instantly about Auckland is you’ll be secluded. Not that the city itself is small or spread out, but the entire country is a couple thousand miles away from most of the rest of the world. Now this may be a perk for someone buying a home internationally, but it is something to consider. As far as the weather there goes, though it is incredibly mild. The average temperature throughout the year doesn’t swing any more than 20-30 degrees, from 50′s to 80′s. Plus the scenery is unbeatable.

Other places that have ranked near the top on the best places in the world are cities like Geneva, Honolulu, and Vancouver.
